If anyone has ever ridiculed you for carrying Bear Spray in the woods, and has subsequently been confronted by a bear, the odds are overwhelming that nobody is laughing any more. Bears are incredibly powerful for their size, which can be huge to begin with. They are near sighted, easily angered, and follow their noses in order to hunt. This last means that they are attracted over long distances to the scent of fresh caught fish, corn chips, or just about anything else you happen to be carrying, except for bear repellent. (They hate that.)

In addition, whatever you have heard to the contrary, bears are extremely hard to put down using firearms. A shot bear may eventually bleed to death, but by that time you won't care. Unless you happen to be carrying a loaded bazooka, you will most likely only further enrage the animal by shooting it. Bear Spray, on the other hand, is approved by the EPA and even endorsed by the Sierra Club, and will stop the bear for long enough for you to get away safely.

This specialized animal repeller works in a way that resembles the operation of smaller pepper sprays. However, common pepper sprays are NOT recommended for repelling bears, because they won't get the job done. Bear Spray will temporarily blind the animal. The bear will be confused, disoriented and unable smell you or your tuna sandwich. The spray can be effectively used from a distance of twenty to thirty feet - I forgot to mention that bears are also surprising quick when they want to be. Don't hesitate. It will only take a few seconds for the canister to empty. Having done that, drop the canister and any other gear except for your canteen, and run.

The bear will undergo a great deal of temporary discomfort, but will not be permanently injured, which is why Bear Spray is endorsed by the Sierra Club. To help put things in perspective, a bear that kills a human being must often be pursued by authorities and destroyed by any means necessary, so you are actually doing the animal a favor while saving your own skin. When shopping for Bear Spray, look for a brand that has been registered with the EPA as being effective on ALL species of bears. There is no sense in bringing a knife to a gunfight.
