Security has never been more important than it is today. Not only airports, but courtrooms, government buildings and other institutions demand proper security measures be taken to help their workers feel safer on the job. Problem is, many of these institutions don't have hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase a new full body scanner such as those being deployed at airports since Christmas. Besides, we have all been shown that there is a very fine line between the need for public security and the right to personal privacy. That's where the Garrett Pro-Scan line of products comes in.

Garrett has long been a respected name in industrial and recreational metal detector technology. Its Garrett Pro-Scan series is widely known among security professionals for its reliability and ease of use. People who must pass through security checkpoints appreciate the fact that no touching is involved in the procedure. A Garrett hand held scanner is simply passed close to the body or parcel. No pat-downs or pocket searches are needed to detect metal objects. Operating on a single nine volt battery, one of these units set on high sensitivity can detect a handgun from almost a foot away, a pen knife from half that distance, or even a single razor blade from four inches.

A Garrett Pro-Scan hand held scanner resembles a British cricket bat in size and shape. It is lightweight, completely portable, and even comes with its own holster. One of these units, a couple of rechargeable nine volt batteries and a charger are are all a security professional needs to check thousands of people or packages for hidden metal objects. A large, flat scanning area makes laborious searches unnecessary. Just pass the instrument smoothly and quickly about the subject. If hidden metal is present, a red light will come on and a warning tone will sound. Security professionals can then simply detour a package or ask a live subject to step aside, and traffic can continue to move at a normal rate.

There are two models of these devices: the Garrett Pro-Scan and the Pro-Scan II. The differences are that the Pro-Scan II costs slightly more, has a sturdier exterior shell and a 20% larger scanning area. It logically follows that the Pro-Scan II is slightly heavier than its older, smaller sibling.
