I have been a high school teacher for quite a long while. I have seen my own students grow up. For some, those who were unfortunate enough, life was cut short because of wrongdoers who are so heartless as to kill for money.
One of my students was hospitalized for numerous months after she was raped by a group of male teenagers. Up to this moment, she is still recovering from that life-altering incident.
The incident made me see how important it was for someone to have some kind of personal safety. I remind my students to be home before dark and to carry self-defense devices with them. I may seem paranoid, but frankly, I care for these kids.
Where appropriate, I incorporate the proper usage of a personal security alarm, stun gun, pepper spray and Taser. I have stressed the importance of having a spy camera, hidden camera, surveillance camera and home security systems to parents.
I am glad to know that some of my students, if not all, take the issue of personal safety seriously. They would take it upon themselves to tell their friends to buy self defense devices for their own security.
A student of mine approached me one afternoon and thanked me for always reminding them the importance of personal safety. With her pepper spray, she was able to get away from a stranger who wanted to get her money at gunpoint.
More and more students have revealed to me the self defense devices they acquired for their own protection. They only have the nicest words on a new safety light, home safety alarm or travel alarm.
I feel as though personal safety completes my teaching vocation. I am happy to have given adolescents a fighting chance out there on dangerous streets, of course, with the aid of self defense devices.
