Security has never been more important than it is today. Not only airports, but courtrooms, government buildings and other institutions demand proper security measures be taken to help their workers feel safer on the job. Problem is, many of these institutions don't have hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase a new full body scanner such as those being deployed at airports since Christmas. Besides, we have all been shown that there is a very fine line between the need for public security and the right to personal privacy. That's where the Garrett Pro-Scan line of products comes in.
Garrett has long been a respected name in industrial and recreational metal detector technology. Its Garrett Pro-Scan series is widely known among security professionals for its reliability and ease of use. People who must pass through security checkpoints appreciate the fact that no touching is involved in the procedure. A Garrett hand held scanner is simply passed close to the body or parcel. No pat-downs or pocket searches are needed to detect metal objects. Operating on a single nine volt battery, one of these units set on high sensitivity can detect a handgun from almost a foot away, a pen knife from half that distance, or even a single razor blade from four inches.
A Garrett Pro-Scan hand held scanner resembles a British cricket bat in size and shape. It is lightweight, completely portable, and even comes with its own holster. One of these units, a couple of rechargeable nine volt batteries and a charger are are all a security professional needs to check thousands of people or packages for hidden metal objects. A large, flat scanning area makes laborious searches unnecessary. Just pass the instrument smoothly and quickly about the subject. If hidden metal is present, a red light will come on and a warning tone will sound. Security professionals can then simply detour a package or ask a live subject to step aside, and traffic can continue to move at a normal rate.
There are two models of these devices: the Garrett Pro-Scan and the Pro-Scan II. The differences are that the Pro-Scan II costs slightly more, has a sturdier exterior shell and a 20% larger scanning area. It logically follows that the Pro-Scan II is slightly heavier than its older, smaller sibling.
At some time, all of us have become drowsy while driving, and many of us have even gone to sleep. It's an eerie feeling; often one awakes without realizing he or she was asleep, except that there is no memory of the last mile of two of highway traveled. When this happens, the best thing a driver can do is pull off the road and get some sleep, but this is often not immediately possible. That is why all distance drivers should carry a Nap Alarm and deploy it as needed.
This is one of those radical concepts that is so simple and logical that we wonder why we haven't seen these devices years ago. Also referred to as a sleep alarm or anti-drowsy alarm, a Nap Alarm is a compact, lightweight unit powered by tiny batteries. It is worn by slipping it on around one ear, which leaves the ear exposed and hearing unhindered. When the head nods - the first sign of falling asleep at the wheel - an electronic sensor notes the change of angle and sets off a small, strident personal alarm, just loud enough to ensure that wearer/driver and any passengers come wide awake.
We fall asleep while driving partly because of fatigue, but also because various vibrations are sleep-inducing at steady frequencies. This is why it can happen so quickly. A Nap Alarm can increase drive security and peace of mind two-fold, because the driver does not have to be the sole judge of whether he or she is becoming drowsy. We can let the machine decide. After all, it's not a bit sleepy!
Owning a Nap Alarm will not turn us into endurance racers. The alarms are designed to save lives, not to replace sleep itself. As soon as yours goes off, start looking for an exit, have someone else drive or take other appropriate measures. These devices can also be used by people whose jobs require that they maintain 100% alertness under difficult circumstances. Examples of these are machine and heavy equipment operators (vibration again) and security guards. Now that we all know about these alarms, and especially at a retail price of less than ten dollars, it's hard to find an excuse not to own one.
No doubt there are many of us retailers who fantasize about what might have been if we had stocked up on Folding Knives before the current collecting boom began. People from all walks of life are building extensive knife collections, and no one is complaining about having too many, except for perhaps spouses of knife collectors. While collections can include ornate and fantastically designed swords, and even battle axes, most most are based around Folding Knives. People enjoy their craftsmanship, looks, feel and utilitarian origins.
Knives, of course, date back to prehistory. Backpackers, campers, hunters and fisherman have all discovered at some point that when there is a need for a good, sharp steel knife, there are very few acceptable substitutes. We all hope we will not need to use Folding Knives for purposes of self defense, but it's a secure feeling to know that we have that option. In the meantime, other practical needs met by these instruments include building a fire, cutting a rope, removing a fish hook and opening packaged foods.
People who work with horses, mules or donkeys should also carry Folding Knives, and many do. The reason is that sooner or later there will be a wreck, and the animal or person may become entangled in various pieces of leather rigging. This is a very dangerous situation, because the animal will soon panic and cause severe injury. Savvy equestrians are prepared to cut their way out, even though it means ruining some expensive tack. I have personally cut a horse out of a fence, because I was the only one present who was carrying a folding knife with wire cutter. The horse was very patient with my efforts, but he could not have remained so for much longer.
For these and many other reasons, Folding Knives purchased for actual use should be designed with locking blades that can be opened with one hand. Usually, when we realize we need a knife, we already have our hands full anyway. Another positive feature is a belt clip or sheath, so that we are not fumbling through pockets with the wrong hand when we suddenly have a pressing need for a good, sharp knife.

Don't fall for the myth that wearing a bicycle helmet is the first and last word that you should follow when it comes to bike safety. The truth is, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and a bike helmet will do absolutely nothing to prevent you getting hit by a car. It's true that the helmet will help you if you do get hit, but your ultimate goal should be to not get hit in the first place, that's what real bicycle safety is all about and that's why you should always consider Bike Safety Lights.
In most parts of the country, it's the law that you need to equip your bicycle with some kind of safety light and doing so almost guarantees your safety, especially if you find yourself riding at night. There are many different kinds of Bike Safety Lights that you can purchase that will be able to meet both the legal requirement as well as your own personal safety. The Micro Bike Lights have a bungee cord and a curved inner surface that allow it to attach easily to your seat post, handlebars or bike frame. Since it flashes steadily while the bike is in motion, cars will be able to see you at a greater distance.
The Bicycle Tail Light has an illumination that reaches 180-degrees, which means that motorists will be able to see you from both sides as well as from behind while the Bicycle Head Light mounts specifically to your handlebars so that you will be able to see where you are going at night. Since it can detach easily, you can also use this headlight as a flash light in an emergency. Headlights on your bike are just as important as tail lights since they allow oncoming cars, as well as those behind you, to see you easier. Look for Bike Safety Lights with LED's since they can last ten-times as long as the old-style lights.
There is no substitute for Bike Safety Lights if you regularly ride your bicycle after dark. No reflective device or material can achieve the same amount of visibility that bike lights can. The typical blinking rear tail light will instantly identify that an individual is riding a bicycle and allow motorists to proceed with caution. You can purchase safety lights at any bicycle shop at an affordable price, or you can find them online at major retailers such as Amazon.
The truth is, it can happen anywhere. If a carjacker sees an opportunity, he will take it so beware. Obviously the larger the city the more frequency of the crime but no town or hamlet is immune.
The area most critical for heightened vigilance is the five mile radius around your home. This is where most carjackings took place. Your most traveled area, where we stop for errands and fast food are perfect opportunities for a carjacker to stage his attack. The moment of attack will come when you are alone, have your key ready, your door is unlocked and you are ready to get in.
So who is attacked most often? Well, if you are a man, believe it or not, you will be carjacked more frequently than a lady. If you are black your chances of being carjacked are higher than if you are white. Are you Hispanic? Beware, you will be carjacked more often than your non-Hispanic counterpart. Finally, if you are married or widowed you’re safer than your single, separated or divorced counterparts. Ladies, you need to keep a stun gun handy!
Some of the reasoning behind these statistics has to do with demographics that frequent risky locations. It’s no surprise that single, guys and gals whether black or Hispanic can be found at bars and nightclubs which tend to be listed in risky locations.
So some of the facts are logical and logic says be prepared. Carry a stun gun with you at all times. You never know when you might be the target of a carjacker.
My wife and I like to take a nice walk through our rural neighborhood and watch the sun set over the Skagit River as fades into the Puget sound. It is a nice usually quiet walk.Unfortunately some bad dog owners think that when they no longer want or can afford that out of control dog, dropping it off in a rural neighborhood is a good idea. It is not, although it does happen.
These are the dogs that require us to carry protection and I would rather use 800,000 volts of dog deterrent in the form of a telescoping stun baton as apposed to shooting my pistol during an attack from a stray dog. It would be nice to think that one day we might not need to worry about the possibility of being attacked by a viscous stray dog. Until that day I will carry a high voltage dog repellent stun baton or other protection device when for protection when the wife and I are on our evening walk.
Not that it would bother me very much to have to shoot a vicious stray dog, my concern would be more for the danger to my neighbors or their animals from a stray bullet. That will never be a problem with a telescoping stun baton. After a couple of seconds of being shocked by 800,000 volts of dog deterrent, that stray dog will probably run and hide when it sees us coming down the street.
